Christmas Home Tour 2020

I know I’m not alone when I say I can’t believe how this year has flown by. It feels like one season is fading into the next without the distinct shifts we get in a “normal” year. With 2020 being so challenging for most of us, we wanted to get cozy and make the season special. Mom and I are so happy with how her home turned out for Christmas. In the video you’ll see that it even made her cry when we were talking about the dining room and what matter most about the season.

CHRISTMAS LIVING ROOM

Let’s start with the living room. I love my mom’s living room the most during the fall and winter because the metal wood holder filled with wood is perfect for the season. You’d never know that it’s 85degrees outside in Texas when you see the wood stacked to the ceiling and the fire going 😋

We built off the blue we incorporated last year, but this time added accents of gold. When you want a change in your seasonal decor you don’t have to change everything. You can simply add one element and move things around to change the entire look for a cost-effective update. Another tip on saving money while changing your holiday decor is simply trading ornaments and decor with a family member or friend. Mom and I did that last year and it was so fun to see how different her decor looked in my house.

We decorated the mantle similar to every year with evergreen stems that we cut in the yard. We love evergreen like this because it will last all season with no effort and is FREE. We layered a second mirror that I simply wrote ‘Comfort and Joy’ on with a chalk marker. Lastly, we added gold candlesticks to complete the look.

The last addition to the living room is the arrangement we put on the coffee table. Mom simply mixed stems from the yard and a few tree picks. It came together with almost no effort. Both of us were super surprised. You don’t have to be a florist to create arrangements like this. When it’s a little messy it looks a little whimsical which is perfect for the season.

CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST NOOK & KITCHEN

One thing we do every year that I love is the garland in the breakfast nook. It perfectly frames the living room. Something new in this room is our modern “letter board.” Mom and I own a coffee shop on Main Street in our town and this board was once our menu. We updated the menu at the shop so I thought it’d be fun to make a Christmas themed board here. All it takes to make this board is thin wooden trim pieces from The Home Depot (or local hardware shop of your choice) and a box of the letters. Since the nativity is there we chose the lyrics to ‘Oh Holy Night.’

As for the kitchen, we kept it simple. When you’re decorating for Christmas in the kitchen, it’s really easy to overdo it and take all your counter space. When cooking those delicious holiday meals for the family you don’t want to take that precious real estate. All we did was add trees to the open shelving and one in the center of the island.

CHRISTMAS DINING ROOM

I feel like I say this every time, but the dining room is definitely my favorite on this tour. This room has been a journey and it feels finished to me. There are still final touches like window treatments, but other than that it’s complete. When I said this to mom on video she started crying thinking about the memories we make here. Every year we have our annual gingerbread house contest with the family. We post our houses on facebook and let our online friends vote who won without knowing who made what. We laugh and talk about the memories for the rest of the year. It’s little moments like this with the most important people in your life that make the season so special. 2020 has reminded us more than ever what’s truly important during the season.

One last detail in the tour is the dog room aka the mudroom. Mom added stockings for the pups on their dutch door. Sam is extra excited to see what lands in his stocking on Christmas eve 😉
