Recently, I read a blog from Rachel at Nourishing Minimalism. The title of her page says it all. Many times when people come into my home they look around to take in the space and comment that they wish they had a home like this, they tell us how beautiful our home is or share how it makes them feel. When they ask me if I’ll help them with their space, I’m always happy to do that. But one of the first secrets I share with friends or clients is the reason they love my home is its simplicity. Walk into a space that is open and light with a few well appointed touches and you feel good. That’s my secret sauce.

When my husband and I were starting out, with very little money, we lived in a 1200 square foot house and when people came into our home I got the same reaction. Our home today is much larger but we still maintain the feel that invites people in and gives a sense of peace and serenity. We do it through simplicity.

I think that’s one of the reasons why I love modern farmhouse. No fuss, just clean and airy with lots of white. And the decor is often functional pieces like a big clock or a scale. Personal touches like quotes on pillows or walls (through metal art, chalkboards or other canvases) are also big in Farmhouse design. Even though we love simplicity, small meaningful displays of collectables, like plates or trays also make your house a home. It’s about choosing the few things you love rather than tons of decor that takes over the space.

With a change of season in our lives we’re thinking of downsizing again. I love the look of European meets modern Farmhouse. Walls without texture that are painted white and light pine doors. We’ll have pops of color with textiles and florals. I’d like the exterior done in baton board siding, painted so bright that you’ll be able to see it from outer space. This is my dream. But no matter where we move next, I know my goal will be the same, to keep it simple and enjoy life with the people I love.
