Coastal Farmhouse Living Room Reveal
When we launched Farmhouse Living in 2016 the first thing we shared was a tour of my mom’s (Michelle) home - the suburban farmhouse. This tour is what launched the community and made us fall in love with this little blog! Today we are excited to be giving you a tour of mom’s new home. It was a house built in the 80’s with no updates, but the perfect layout for my parents since my mom loves open concept and my dad loves separate rooms. We’ll be sharing more about the layout soon, but today we are revealing the Living Room.
The best way to kick off any design project is with a fresh coat of paint. We chose Sherwin William's Alabaster (SW 7008). We didn't want to go too white, but definitely didn't want the color to appear cream or show any yellow undertones. Alabaster definitely achieves this!
PRO TIP: When choosing a paint color definitely test it in the space. Alabaster looks great in this space because it has tons of natural light. It might not be white enough for you if you don't have tons of windows like this living room does. I only have one large window in my living room so I'm choosing to go a little whiter.
If you’ve been following us for a while much of this space will look familiar to you, specifically, the slipcovered couches, the coffee table, and my dad’s recliner is non-negotiable. It’s worth mentioning for the hundredth time how much we love these slipcovered sofas. It’s dog, kid and wine proof. Yes, we’ve spilled red wine and they look awesome still. You can find the sofas here.
We love faux florals and greenery, but there was so much beautiful greenery (maybe weeds) in the backyard that we popped them in some Dollar General Vases and they make such a statement. We’ve been replacing them with fresh cuttings every 3-4 weeks and they look good until then. If you’re on a budget for decor I highly recommend this design strategy 😉
We decided to try the layered rug trend in this space and we think it looks great. It took me a second to get used to the look, but it definitely made a statement that neutrals often can’t do on their own. Mom says what she loves most about the layered rug look it that she can layer a thinner rug on top of a jute rug and the jute rug helps it stay in place while the thin one can be tossed in the washing machine when necessary. We are crazy dog people so washable rugs are important.
The biggest update in this space was the fireplace and the built ins around it. Mom chose to go European with the German schmear on the white stone. We used a reclaimed barn beam for a mantle and white concrete for the hearth for a more modern look. To the right of the fireplace, mom had my dad weld a box for firewood. We live in Texas, but the second we can call the season we’re in “Fall” my mom has a fire going so I wasn’t surprised she wanted a large portion of her wall dedicated to firewood. These befores blew my mind when I looked back on what it was before.
That gorgeous fig you see above is real and the pot is just from our local Home Depot. I love the way it was cut to grow and it was the perfect height for the room. It adds so much life to the room and also looks very high end. My dad walked in the day we brought it in and said "How much did that cost?" 😋
When designing a gathering space like the living room we try to layer in as much seating as possible. These poufs from Article are a great option because they're comfortable and don't take up much space or block the view of the fireplace.
The living room is open to the breakfast nook and the kitchen making it perfect for hosting. The long layout gives each room a dedicated feel which appealed to my dad who prefers closed concepts. We’ll be sharing the kitchen + dining room next week! Here's a sneak peek of before and afters.
