How We Keep Our Home Clean with 3 Hairy Pups (& Other Animals)

2021 Resolution: Keep the house dog hair and dirt free. I love our fur family and I can’t imagine a life without our pups (and chickens). I joke that we have a little suburban farm and with the addition of a one-year-old baby we have become very familiar with mess. Today I’m sharing my weekly routine for cleaning this house with all our pets!

1. VACUUM EVERY DAY

This sounds unreasonable doesn’t it! Before you click off, hear me out. ALL of our dogs shed. Our third and most fluffy puppy Bailey sheds enough for 5 dogs. We adopted him 4 years ago and suspect that he’s mixed with golden. Those golden tumbleweeds take diligence or they quickly take over the house…

When trying to come up with a way to handle all the hair I quickly realized that CONVENIENCE is key because it’s going to have to be something we do every day. We needed a vacuum that wasn’t a hassle to get out and could get under furniture and in between things without moving things around. The BISSELL® ICONpet™ Cordless Vacuum is the ticket. It’s lightweight and cordless. If you’ve never had a cordless vacuum, this is a game-changer when it comes to convenience. Not having to unroll the cord and maneuver it through the house saves so much time. Also, it fits under the sofa and built-ins in the living room where those pesky hair balls might be hiding. My favorite feature on this vacuum is the LED lights on the front. In the past, I’ve never known if I fully got all the fuzz on the floor. The light makes it so easy to truly see where you haven’t reached. This alone makes it so much easier to keep up with the shedding.

2. CATCH THEIR FEET BEFORE THEY COME IN

If your dogs are like mine then they love to go in and out often. I love to give them time to play and get sunshine, but that typically means they’re tracking in dirt, especially with our backyard chickens. I do my best to keep a towel handy by the door. I’ve made it such a routine that they all “shake” when they get to the door to get their feet wiped. This wasn’t the case when we first started this, but now it’s super cute and helpful to keep the floors clean.

3. VACUUM THE SOFAS & CHAIRS

Ever sit down on the couch to get up and realize you’re completely covered in dog hair…? This has been me many times but the BISSELL® ICONpet™ Cordless Vacuum has multiple attachments, making it super compact and easy to get in all the nooks and crannies of the couch. I’ve been blown away by how much fur is on the cushions.

4. HAVE AN UPHOLSTERY CLEANER ON HAND

Y’all! This has been a total game-changer. I chose a sofa that looks like it wouldn’t show dirt, but that hasn’t been the case. Luckily, I found another product from BISSELL that makes my life so much easier. The BISSELL® Pet Stain Eraser(™) PowerBrush Portable Carpet Cleaner has made it so easy to look like we don’t allow the pups on the sofa. We’ve tried to make that a rule a couple of times but we just can’t stand not getting our snuggles in.

I actually have an outlet in my living room built-in and I keep my BISSELL® Pet Stain Eraser PowerBrush Portable Carpet Cleaner charged and ready to use. I thought I’d use it once a month, but it’s been more of a weekly, even daily, task recently. Having a convenient tool makes spills and dirt so much less frustrating.

5. ENJOY YOUR PETS

It’s so easy to look around at the tumbleweeds of fur on the ground and feel like you’re never going to be able to keep up. While my goal is definitely to set myself up for success to keep the house clean, I still want to enjoy our pups and appreciate how they make our family special.

Do you have any tips to keep up with the fur and dirt? Also, what are your home goals for 2021? I’d love to hear in the comments below.
