It’s said that black anchors a room. So if a room feels unfinished you might try to add a black accent to see if that’s all it needs to complete the space. But black is so bold, you may wonder if painting a wall or even the entire room black is it too much of a good thing? Absolutely not! When black is done right it gives a refined and sophisticated, even cozy feel. We’re sharing some of our favorite black and charcoal wall inspiration to see what you think.

First, we have a black living room. One of the interesting trends is to paint walls and trim, including the crown molding all the way up the ceiling. This gives an even bigger punch! Paired with a light tan sofa and modern lighting accents, this black living room feels like the perfect spot to cuddle up with a good book for a while. I love the way the light plays off the deep black hues and while I may not choose this for my main family room, I could totally see this as a cozy secondary living space.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS IRON ORE

SOURCE

Sherwin Williams Iron Ore is an AMAZING dark moody charcoal paint color. We have used SW Iron Ore in the kitchen and laundry room on cabinets. If black is too harsh or bold a statement, consider a softer look with a charcoal gray, This is a fun accent for doors as well. We used it on the pantry door as well as the barn door leading into the laundry space and the mud room/dog room door. The sophisticated look of this color can elevate just about any room!

FARROW AND BALL RAILINGS

SOURCE

Farrow and Ball colorists are on point with this deep rich charcoal. When choosing a black or charcoal its important to see it in your space. In certain light some black and charcoal will read blue. If you are looking for that shade of undertone, it’s great. But if you want a more true charcoal you will need to stick with shades like Railings. It’s still always a good idea to do a large sample with any color. Measured steps will keep you from regretting your choice and having to repaint. The earthy wood floors in this space make this color the perfect choice in this space!

What is more stylish than a black kitchen! We have seen the dramatic effect of black cabinetry but this black-on-black takes it over the top! Coupled with warm wood tones, a black kitchen is so rich and beautiful. Black in the kitchen is definitely one of my favorites! Again pairing it with brass lighting and fixtures creates elegance and high style.

You might think painting a small space a dark color would make it feel smaller and cave-like. But this stunning bathroom proves that’s not true. If you love the look of black but are nervous to make such a bold decision, a powder bath or guest bathroom might be the perfect spot to test it out.

BEDROOM BY JENNIE @THE.LITTLE.BIRD

SHERWIN WILLIAMS BLACK MAGIC

SOURCE

What’s better than a moody black bedroom. I’ve seen bedrooms with black or charcoal colors with either one accent wall behind the bed or the whole room painted and love both. This room with light wood floors feels like a space for rest and serenity. Again, if you want the moody feel but not the full commitment try painting an accent wall. For a softer feel, go with charcoal or even a soft black. Black comes in so many tones; from bold and impactful to more soft and warm. If you want to tour the entire home you can see it here. Every room is just as stunning as the bedroom.

Another great room to try black is a sitting room or office. It can lend so much sophistication. But you can also use a black backdrop to go playful and whimsical. Any room in the house, from a bedroom, living, sitting, dining room or office can be a showstopper with pops of color against black or charcoal walls. Accents of gold or brass are even more beautiful and vibrant with black as an anchor.
